As the First OPTOg Work
With the recent website renewal, we renamed what had previously been listed as “PINGs” to “OPTOg”.
Originally, “Ping” referred to one particular format of content we had been creating—a programme-style format in which our performers, Peter, Jesse and Yulin, developed a conversation.
As things gradually expanded, however, we found ourselves wanting to create more irregular kinds of content as well… and so, in order to give them a more inclusive category, we eventually changed the name.
Like PINGs, but Not PINGs
Our latest upload, Ponging from Undefined Re:sort, features Peter, Jesse and Yulin.
Going by the original meaning, it may seem as though it ought to be called one of the “PINGs”. This time, however, we chose not to do so.
This is a private message from the three of them, and it is not a work made in the format we have built up through PINGs.
The “Residue” Category
Works such as these are grouped under a category called “Residue” on the website.
It may not be a particularly familiar word, though you may have come across it in fields such as science, law, mathematics, biology or agriculture.
And if you happen to be a programming specialist, you may have encountered it in that context too.
Its meaning is something along the lines of “something left behind” or “a remainder”… and I think it is rather a good name for capturing the nature of these works.

What kind of content will we create from now on? Frankly, we do not really know ourselves.
Our content is not something that is meticulously planned. It is more like happening to catch a signal that has drifted in from somewhere.
Perhaps several PINGs will appear one after another. Or perhaps Residue videos will turn up whenever they please.
Either way, whatever they become, they will surely be something that feels unmistakably “ShortWave.STUDIO”.
