An Age When the “Essence of Being Human” Gains Value

EN Qualia

Precisely Because AI Has Become a Substitute for Humans

It is thoroughly ironic, but ever since AI became capable enough to serve as a necessary and sufficient substitute for humans, something has increased in relative value.

Human beings themselves.

Machines have surpassed humans and become capable of accomplishing all manner of things in our place. At times, their output is indistinguishable from that of a human—or reaches levels that humans could never hope to achieve.

It can feel like a defeat for humanity.

Something That Was Already Valuable

And yet, something else has gained new value.

The “essence of being human”.

More precisely, it had always been valuable. Perhaps its value had simply been overlooked.

So what is the “essence of being human”?

It is what humans bring forth.

Walking, running, flying, speaking, singing, drawing, dancing, thinking, producing, expressing, imagining. And creating.

Machines can do these things too. But when machines do them, no value arises from the act itself. What arises instead is surprise, possibility, and anticipation.

Humans find value in humans doing these things.

Yes, That Includes You

Simply by being human, you already possess a certain advantage.

Just as it does for everyone else, value resides in the things you bring forth.

There is no need to worry. It does not have to be anything special.
