Japan is a land wherein eight million gods are said to dwell.

Within all things that are, there abideth a god; and each doth fix its gaze upon thee, judging thee in silence.

Even within a single grain of sand doth a god reside. Thus is there no gap, nor any place beyond their sight.

And there are, moreover, those gods called tatari-gami—gods that bring calamity upon men.

Those who dwell in Japan know this well. Aye, they know what followeth from what is done. They know.

We may say naught of what ye do. Yet deem not our silence to mean that ye have been approved.

Call to mind the eyes that have been turned upon you. Hast thou ever wondered what meaning lay within their gaze?

Didst thou see a Jizō by the roadside? Hast thou marked the sign of a torii? Hast thou, in some passing moment, felt eyes upon thee from within the green? Hast thou met the gaze of a fox?

Aye.

We are watched.
