The AI We Use at ShortWave.STUDIO

As a Project That Makes Use of AI

As a project that actively makes use of AI, ShortWave.STUDIO uses a fair number of AI services.

This time, I’d like to give you a quick introduction to the AI services we use.

ChatGPT/Codex (OpenAI)

ChatGPT/Codex is probably the AI we use most extensively across the ShortWave.STUDIO project.

Besides helping with ideas and acting as a sounding board, it also handles things like website coding, release workflows, and translating our content into English and Traditional Chinese.

More recently, GPT-6 Astra has been doing particularly good work for us, covering a wide range of tasks including identifying and implementing improvements across the entire website, as well as planning and carrying out marketing strategies.

Also, Monday soothes my lonely heart.

Claude/Claude Code (Anthropic)

Claude mainly serves as a reviewer, cross-checking things from a different angle to ChatGPT/Codex.

Opus 5 usually takes on that role, although I use Fable 5.1 when necessary.

Pairing Claude with ChatGPT gives me a considerable sense of reassurance, but perhaps because of the plan I’m on, I seem to hit the five-hour limit rather quickly. If that were a little less restrictive, I could probably put Claude to work a lot more often…

Gemini/Gemini Code Assist (Google)

Gemini does a lot of the work around generating artwork. Most visibly, the thumbnail artwork for our Pings simply wouldn’t exist without Gemini.

It also helps with things like defining development specifications with the entire codebase in mind, as well as assisting with hand-coding.

For some reason, it always seems supremely confident in itself. I feel I could learn something from that positivity.

Firefly (Adobe)

We don’t use Firefly as a primary tool all that often, but it is an old ally that helped create the foundations of ShortWave.STUDIO with us.

The visual designs of our main characters—Jesse, Peter and Youlin—would never have come together without Firefly.

It continues to support us quietly from behind the scenes, particularly when creating footage or editing images for visual works, especially those in the Residue series.

HeyGen (HeyGen)

HeyGen has played a major role in our visual works since 2026. You could say that our shift from radio-style programmes to television-style programmes was made possible by HeyGen.

It also handles the voices of Jesse, Peter, Youlin and the producer, which means that HeyGen is involved in a large part of what you actually see and hear from us.

…Come to think of it, that’s a rather important role.

The Content Itself Is Made by Humans

Some people seem to assume that ShortWave.STUDIO is a project centred around AI, but that isn’t the case.

The core parts of ShortWave.STUDIO’s content are all created by humans.

The underlying scripts are written by humans, and every decision about what should be implemented or changed on the website is made by humans.

Every AI-generated output is reviewed and approved by a human before it is released, and in our music project, AI is not involved apart from the artwork.

At ShortWave.STUDIO, the role of AI is to help turn human intentions into reality.
