Everyone Loves AI!
The internet is overflowing with opinions on how AI should be used.
Some voices are enthusiastic about it, while others tear it to pieces.
Some call for everyone to calm down, while others sink into despair.
It is, quite simply, chaos.
So I thought I might throw my own thoughts into that fountain of opinions.
“Bringing Out the Best in the Ingredients” and “Making Someone Eat the Ingredients” Are Not the Same Thing, You Know?
It seems to me that a lot of people see AI output as a “finished product”.
Yes, I’ll be honest. That is simply how it feels to me.
But I think AI output is “raw material”. I do, anyway.
AI can produce some truly excellent things in a very short amount of time,
but it is rather like a jewellery box filled with both gems and pretty stones.
A “gemstone” and a “pretty stone” are not the same thing, are they? That’s what I mean.
So when something like that is simply placed in front of me, I’m never quite sure how I’m supposed to react.
“What exactly are you planning to make with these potatoes and this pork?” I find myself wondering.
It’s Finished When There’s Nothing Left to Remove
I can no longer remember who said it, or where I read it,
but the idea that “the moment there is nothing left to remove is the moment something is complete” has stayed with me for a very long time.
AI is incredibly good at adding things. But it cannot subtract.
At least, not yet.
“You’re wrong!” you might think.
But are you sure? …If your answer is “Yes”, I’m afraid you and I probably aren’t going to be friends.
Was that shiny little stone really what you wanted? I don’t think it was.
Even a gemstone starts as a great lump of rough stone that has to be cut and polished into shape, doesn’t it?
I think AI output is much the same.
